What are alphabets?

Alphabets are the first step to learning how to read. They have been in use since ancient times and have evolved.

The first documented evidence of alphabetic writing is from about 2200BC, but it is thought that this method of writing was used much earlier than this date. The oldest alphabet known today is called proto-Sinaitic, which was used by the Semitic-speaking peoples of ancient Egypt and Canaan (today Israel, Palestine, Syria, and Jordan). This was written in the early second millennium BC and consists of twenty-two letters representing consonants only.

Over time, many new alphabets were created based on these early variants. The Phoenician alphabet expanded to include vowels; Greek added letters for vowels; Latin added more letters; Cyrillic was developed by Christians in Russia; Arabic added three more letters; Hebrew also added three more letters; Armenian had thirty-eight letters at one point!
